The Growth of My Ribs Cracked Open

My brother’s toy soldier

washes into the belly

of the shark & I wear

old time swim-clothes

striped, skirted, bows

in my hair –

this beach does not come

from me, but only pavements

& keeping my thoughts

safe in ice, cut

thumbs. Hairdos & old

shoes & between it all

a whole life of

stems holding

their breath, readying

themselves for

a whisper.
